Various authors, genres and techniques. I have to note that the way how works were displayed in the gallery was not successful. Due to the small rooms and different corners and openings that looked like prison cells locking the artworks the effect of these works was diminished or completely destroyed. It is not the fault of authors, nor gallery employees, as the gallery is just located in premises that are completely inadequate for display of art. E.g. if a painting is put in a corridor that is barely the width of a person’s shoulders and so the viewer has to look at this painting from 10 cm distance by not able to move or change angles or distance, it kills the effect of that painting. The same with sculptures being cramped in a basement space that reminds of a medieval cell and is the size of a cupboard where only a gnome could go in and not feel claustrophobic or like an elephant in a glass shop. One piece of work that was a sculpture meant to be standing vertical was just put on the floor horizontally on a piece of newspaper and anyone not looking at the floor could have stepped on it and broken it. Several other pieces (paintings) were put on walls behind furniture and did not let the viewer come closer to look at them or read the added information bits. Honestly I have to say this was the worst gallery I have ever been in and I feel truly sorry for the artists whose works are represented there.
The artworks themselves were interesting to me as there was a range of different styles and techniques that made me inspired. For example, a work that was made by Anthony Frost “Golden void” using acrylic and pumice on hessian, card and canvas. The size of materials was exceeding the frame of canvas and the textures were really interesting. I am not convinced about the choice of colours though. However, this artwork shows that the artist can use any materials he or she sees fit to get the desired effect and such choice should not be limited to traditional ones.
